at Sinai. This earlier instruction was quite extensive (Exod. 28, 29, 39, 40; Lev. 1–8, 11–17, 21, 22, 27; Num. 15, 29). The concern of Moses was that God’s will be fully understood. He particularly stressed the thesis that obedience to Yahweh brings blessing, but disobedience can lead to disaster. Then he appointed Joshua to be his successor. When this final task was finished, Moses ascended Mount Pisgah, was given sight of the land afar off, and died alone. God buried him. With Joshua a new, second
